Pre/Power Amplifiers

The Onkyo Controller app offers full control over the new P-80 preamplifier and other Onkyo separates. A larger tablet screen provides a less cramped view of its rather austere interface – on a smaller smartphone it is usable [see picture below] but you might end up swiping and scrolling a lot more, as the app is packed with functionality. Four main shortcuts are available along the bottom, the first bringing up both physical inputs and streaming options. The latter list is very long, but also deceptive as only two streaming choices are built-in (TuneIn Radio and UPnP server playback).

Selecting any of the others requires you to head to another app, such as Tidal or Qobuz. Another shortcut opens a list of audio options, including everything needed to integrate a subwoofer. Tone controls are present too, with a useful dialogue lift for improving intelligibility when watching TV. From the Controller app you can also initiate Dirac measurements, a possibility added only recently and tailored for the puck microphone that’s bundled with the P-80.
