Grace Jones: Nightclubbing Alternate Format Discography

Alternate Format Discography

Nightclubbing was released in May 1981 in a single sleeve with the blue Island Records palmtree labels in Europe [203 481, pictured below]. In the UK the album came with gold record labels, which included an alternative 'cigarette' portrait from the front cover shoot.

The sleeve contained a full-colour order form for the video cassette of Grace Jones' One Man Show, directed by Jean-Paul Goude [Island ILPs 9624]. The US version shared this catalogue number but arrived with standard blue Island Records labels.

In Chile, Nightclubbing was released by Island and Quatro with the song titles translated into Spanish on the sleeve and the record label – on which the album title reads as 'Nightclubing' [ILP 20014].

Cassette
We had the first UK cassette of Nightclubbing in 1981, with red text on a white shell or a black shell with black text on white paper labels [Island ICT 9624]. The US version had white shells with black text [Island M5 9624]. In 1986 Island Records reissued the album on cassette as part of its 25 Years Island Life Collection [ICM 9624, pictured above].

In 2014 a remastered Deluxe Edition double CD was released by Island and Universal Music Group International in European territories [0600753480601]. CD 1 was the original album while CD 2 featured 12in and extended versions of 'Demolition Man', 'Pull Up To The Bumper', 'I've Seen That Face Before (Libertango)', 'Walking In The Rain', 'Use Me' And 'Feel Up'; a remix of 'Pull Up To The Bumper'; and two outtakes – 'If You Wanna Be My Lover', rather mysteriously credited to 'writers unknown', and a cover version of Gary Numan's 'Me! I Disconnect From You'.

These same tracks were also released in Europe on an audio-only Blu-ray disc in the High Fidelity Pure Audio series, an initiative launched by Universal Music Group in 2013, which like DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD was seen as a potential successor to the Compact Disc [Island/Universal, 0600753484463].

Audiophile LP
As part of the celebrations of Island Records' 50th birthday, a limited edition LP of Nightclubbing was issued on the Island 50 and Back To Black series in Europe in 2009 on 180g vinyl [0042284236812]. It was released again in these territories in 2014, this time as a double LP including the extra tracks from the same year's Deluxe Edition CD, in a gatefold sleeve [0600753480540]. A Loves Vinyl series club edition with sticker, pressed by Dublin Vinyl, was also released by Island in 2020 [0042284236812].
