Mission 770 Loudspeaker The Original 770

The Original 770

Reviewed by Trevor Attewell [HFN Mar '79], the inaugural 770 met its modest 84dB sensitivity although the response of the 25mm SEAS soft-dome tweeter was shown to dip away by about 4-5dB above 5kHz to produce a slightly muted presence/treble – quite the opposite of what some critics reported hearing.

The 206mm polypropylene bass/mid unit was originally bought from Chartwell, before the latter ceased trading and Mission's founder, Farad Azima, bought the licence to continue its manufacture. Crossover to the tweeter was at 2.7kHz, with 1st and 2nd-order slopes, below which the impedance remained comfortably above ~9ohm. Even within the tweeter's passband, the impedance remained >6.5ohm, ensuring the 770 was an easy drive for amplifiers of the day. PM
