Amandine Bayer, Leila Schayegh, Et Al : Antonio Caldara: Trio Sonatas
96kHz/24-bit FLAC, Glossa GCD922514 (supplied by www.highresaudio.com)
This new Schola Cantorum Basiliensis production offers eight of the Venetian composer Antonio Caldara’s early trio sonatas – four each from his Op.1 and Op.2 – together with a final chaconne (probably an homage to Corelli). These works appeared in 1693 and 1699; thereafter Caldara became best known for his vocal compositions. The trio sonatas last for around eight minutes, in Op.1 alternating slow and fast movements, in Op.2 mostly a prelude then three dance movements, and with the two violinists variously supported by cello, keyboard instruments (organ or harpsichord) or archlute. The players are intimately set in an Austrian church with a neutral acoustic and their playing could hardly be more appealing. They clearly love what they are doing, even if the music lacks depth. So it’s an enjoyable listen. CB

A genuine 96kHz rendering, this download accurately expresses the full harmonic reach of the strings and, especially, that of the harpsichord over the available ~45kHz bandwidth. Good use of dynamic range, too. PM
