Five star

Magico says its new S5 loudspeaker ‘continues what began’ with the S3 2023 model [HFN May ’24], leveraging new design and test technologies at its Californian R&D facility. These include a Klippel Near-Field Scanner to fully quantify its on and off-axis responses, and a laser vibrometer to identify and minimise vibrations in its 1.21m-tall, 118.8kg cabinet.

The S5 2024 features four drivers in a three-way configuration. At the top of its gently curved baffle is a 28mm diamond-coated beryllium tweeter, derived from the flagship M series, with FEA-modelled back chamber and neodymium magnet. The 180mm midrange and twin 250mm woofers use the manufacturer’s new Nano-Tec v.8 cone material, claiming improvements in distortion and damping characteristics, and are mounted in a new third-generation chassis. Resistors and coils from Mundorf are deployed in the new S5’s ‘Elliptical Symmetry Crossover’.

The speaker enclosure’s internal volume is increased by 31% over the previous S5, enabling lower extension (to a claimed 20Hz) while maintaining an 88dB sensitivity. Impedance is rated at 4ohm and power handling 1kW.

The S5 2024 [pictured left, next to the S3 2023] will sell in six Softec and six High Gloss finishes, with pricing at ‘circa-£100k’. Orders placed in 2024 will be supplied with an engraved 20th anniversary accessory box.
